Movie review of Inglourious Serfs
The word "alternative" to refer to Ukraine in the movie "Inglorious Whirlpool...", sorry, "Inglorious serfs" was used for a reason. And it's not just about the schizophrenic plot described above. The "Ukrainian" environment in this film will drive away the obvious desire of the creators to sharpen it under a "Western" style: local landlords wear clothes that were copied from the clothes of American slave owners in the movie Django Unchained (2013), local Jews sell winchesters and triple-barreled revolvers, like ... guess where. It is unclear why the filmmakers did not reproduce the real Ukrainian environment of the 19th century (for example, they did not buy tickets to the ethnographic museum in Pirogovo), and instead of samurai, ninjas (yes, they were added to this film) and cowboy-like servants of landlords, they did not introduce good and bad Cossacks, serfs and chumaks into the plot? They probably decided that thoughtlessly pushing alien elements into Ukrainian territories was interesting and funny in itself. And, perhaps, Ukrainian cinema should help with the development of other cultures, because American, Japanese and Jewish cultures are greatly deprived of the attention of world cinema, not like Ukrainian: what Hollywood movie wouldn't you take – are there mentions of Ukrainians everywhere and their culture is shown, or not?
By the way, there are Cossacks in this movie too. Their leader, Bohdan Chuba, initially looks like a positive character: he is fighting against the landlords who enslaved the Ukrainian people, organizes an uprising, rallies people around himself. It is he who releases Taras and Akayo from temporary captivity, who, by the way, do not take any part in the liberation of Ukrainians from serfdom during the course of the plot, but only solve their own problems. But it seems that right during the filming, the screenwriter changed his mind and decided that it was unworthy of a Cossack to be a positive character. And further along the plot, it turns out that Chuba, before starting his struggle, shot the family (infanticide included) of the same Jewish arms dealer, and shot them with weapons taken from them (because these "smart guys" brought loaded weapons for sale to some obviously muddy man without protection), for that the merchant now wants revenge.
However, why the merchant decides to join the main characters and arrange a raid on the landowner, with whom he has friendly relations, is unclear. Well, then Chuba goes into all sorts of trouble and becomes the main villain of the film (and at the same time a complete fool): starting a shootout with the same landowner from the third paragraph, he quickly agrees to negotiate with his blood enemy, and after half a minute agrees to go over to the landowner's side, agreeing to shoot his own people, whom he He fired me and rallied me around him. Why the landowner did not shoot Chubu immediately after that, but made him the head of his mercenaries is another mystery of the scenario.
Perhaps this is a veiled hint from the screenwriter: they say, look, Ukrainians, the landowner who held your ancestors for slaves was more honest than these Cossacks of yours. Although it is possible that the screenwriter himself does not understand what he screwed up in his script. By the way, the plot arc of the landowner is another sign of the alternative nature of everything that is happening, only now not only in relation to history, but also to common sense. Do you know what would happen to an impudent landowner who shot his "colleague in the shop", also with the highest status?
